That's what Melani Andrews, of Galt, told the Front Street Animal Shelter when she went in to find a furry companion.
2 Staff members at the Front Street Animal Shelter were delighted that someone would want to adopt their oldest dog.
They also had to inform Melani about his condition.
3 The senior pup was partially blind, completely deaf and suffered from terminal skin cancer.
Because of his cancer, Jake isn’t expected to live for more than about six months. And while the idea of losing another loved one so soon after her dog Lola and her husband might be daunting, Andrews says she’s up for it.
4 Jake is enjoying a great life with Melani and the two love each other’s company.
They take regular walks around the neighborhood and they also get nice and cozy in Melani’s fleece blanket. Her plan is to make sure that Jake’s twilight years are as comfy as possible and thanks to her efforts, this pup is going to enjoy a peaceful existence for the rest of his days.
5 Even though Andrews knows she might not have much time with Jake, she's cherishing their every moment together.
"He's extremely friendly and already in guard mode for me," she said. "He's a love to be around. I hope his story means that a lot of dogs who get passed over get new homes."
6 The two best friends are treasuring every moment they can spend together, even if that time is limited.
